Chicago wins!

Well the Cubbies are going to the playoffs. Thought I’d dig up some Cubs jokes:

On a recent tour of the United States, the Pope took a couple of days off his itinerary to visit the Florida coastline on an impromptu sightseeing trip.

His 4×4 Pope-mobile was driving along the beautiful shoreline when there was an enormous commotion heard just off the headland.

They rushed to see what it was and upon approaching the scene, the Pope noticed in the water a hapless man wearing a Chicago Cubs baseball jersey, struggling frantically to free himself from the jaws of a huge shark.

At that moment a speedboat containing three men wearing White Sox jerseys roared into view from around the point. Immediately, one of the men took aim and fired a harpoon into the shark’s ribs, immobilizing it instantly. The other two reached out and pulled the Cubs fan from the water and then, using long clubs, beat the shark to death.

They bundled the bleeding, semiconscious man into the boat along with the dead shark and then prepared for a hasty retreat when they heard frantic shouting from the shore.

It was the Pope summoning them to the beach. After they reached the shore, the Pope praised them for the rescue and said, “I give you my blessing for your brave actions. I had heard that there was bitter hatred between the people of south and north sides of Chicago, but now I have seen with my own eyes this is not true. I can see that your society is a truly enlightened example of true harmony and could serve as a model on which others could follow.”

He blessed them all and drove off in a cloud of dust. As he departed, the harpooner asked the others, “Who was that?”

“That,” one answered, “that was the Holy Father, His Holiness the Pope, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the spiritual leader of millions of faithful Christians around the world.”

“Well,” the harpooner replied, “He doesn’t seem to know diddley about shark fishing. Is the bait holding up okay or do we need to get another one?”

The last time the Cubbies won a world Championship was 1907:

Twenty major events that have occurred since the Chicago Cubs last laid claim to a World Series championship:

1. Radio was invented; Cubs fans got to hear their team lose.

2. TV was invented; Cubs fans got to see their team lose.

3. Baseball added 14 teams; Cubs fans get to see and hear their team lose to more clubs.

4. George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.

5. Haley’s comet passed Earth twice.

6. Harry Caray was born….and died. Incredible, but true.

7. The NBA, NHL and NFL were formed, and Chicago teams won championships in each league.

8. Man landed on the moon, as have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers.

9. Sixteen U.S. presidents were elected.

10. There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution.

11. Prohibition was created and repealed.

12. The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered and became the subject of major motion pictures, the latest giving Cubs fans hope that something that finishes on the bottom can come out on top.

13. Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National League.

14. Flag poles were erected on Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team’s future World Series pennants. Those flag poles have since rusted and been taken down.

15. A combination of 40 Summer and Winter Olympics have been held.

16. Thirteen baseball players have won the Triple Crown; several thanked Cubs pitchers.

17. Bell-bottoms came in style, went out of style and came back in.

18. The Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and the Florida Marlins have all won the World Series.

19. The Cubs played 14,153 regular-season games; they lost the majority of them.

20. Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Oklahoma and New Mexico were added to the Union.

Random thoughts @ 2am

It’s 2am….just some thoughts

…..Robert Palmer died yesterday…you know you are getting old when some of your favorite singers from when you grew up start kicking off.
…..Any particular reason Doritos are triangular?
…..I really admire the togetherness and the family that the asian community seems to have. Maybe it goes with being a minority. I feel like I miss out sometimes being caucasian.
…..Hey! What happened to the inside out Reese’s cups???

Enough rambling…off to bed!

Web re-redesign and blogs of note

Like the headline up top? Just added….

I updated my new clients website again. Hope he likes it :)
Found a blog about the 8.0 earthquake in Japan May be hard to find a good English blog on this news story.

And I see that there is a website with an index of Chicago bloggers, sorted by city/suburb location, so you can see bogs in your neighborhood. Kind of cool! (yeah, I’ll get mine listed there, as well as the Chicago weblog webring, which lists 182 Chicago weblogs! (click on list at the bottom)

Eventually I am going to set up this weblog with comments, but that means getting a new blogging engine set up which I don’t have time for right now.

Perceptions of other cultures

Busy weekend!

Attended a couple of Filipino parties this weekend where I was frequently asked “Do you like Filipino food?” In fact, I do, but the fact that I was even asked just shows shows how much farther we have to go. Whites have a tendency to be boorish and rather closed minded when it comes to other customs and food. If asian culture and food is so bad, why do asians make up more than HALF of the world’s population? I am glad I count myself among the few who ARE open minded.

Went on Sunday to a Chay Yew reading downtown, “A Language of Their Own” . Very nice reading, and afterwards the playwright gave a short Q/A session. Afterwards went to Chinatown and had Peking Duck, lobster and shared entrees with 8 other friends. Boy was I full!

Going to a fund raising organizational meeting for Chicago House tonight. should be interesting, and it’s for a good cause!

Atended Flash mob 3 yesyerday. Auctioned off the Picasso sculpture at Daley Plaza. It was way too short…by the time I worked my way around the auction had ended! Next one is supposed to be 9/28!

From the Chicago Breaking Views weblog (linked on the left)
How to create your own “Star Wars” name:

“For your new first name: Take the first 3 letters of your first name and add the first 2 letters of your last name.

For your new last name: Take the first 2 letters of your Mother’s maiden name and add the first 3 letters of the city you were born in.”

That would make me Chahe Milda (sounds Asian) Why Chahe? E-mail me, and I’ll tell you the whole story!

Where was bradheld.com yesterday?

Well, no juice! This affected THOUSANDS of website, not just mine

See the email/article I received from my web hosting company:

Last night the building our Network Operations Center is housed in
experienced an electrical fire. The utility and the fire department
required that all electric devices be disconnected in the building as a
safety precaution. Unfortunately that involved all of our network equipment
and servers. During the evacuation of the building, 4 of the NOC
personnel were permitted to remain behind for a few minutes with the
supervision of the fire department in order to perform a clean shutdown of the
equipment. We are thankful that no one was injured during this event.
Despite the risk, these folks made sure that everything was downed in a
controlled manner and there was no loss of data or equipment.

Even though we maintain standby power units and power conditioners on
site, we were required to disconnect these from the building power
structure by the fire department and utility. Late last night the utility
gave the go-ahead to re-energize the building. Additional personnel
were called in by Alabanza, Inc. (the Network Center operator) and began
the long process of restarting the network from a cold state.
Complicating this effort was the fact that incoming power to the building was
fluctuating for the first few hours overnight, slowing things down. As
of this writing (6 AM EST) about half of our servers are back up and
running, and the rest should be operational by 10 AM Eastern Time.

You may read an article on this event at the Baltimore Sun’s website:
